worries about closure of clinics in Franconia: could leave region without immediate medical care?
Ebern Hospital in Bavaria to Close by End of 2025
After facing financial difficulties and the inability to maintain economically viable operations, the Ebern Hospital in Bavaria, Germany, will be closing by the end of 2025. The hospital has struggled with low patient numbers, high operating costs relative to usage, and structural and demographic changes reducing demand for inpatient care in small local hospitals.
The Haßberg Clinics, the hospital's parent organization, have been implementing a comprehensive medical strategy since November 2024 with the aim of adapting to the upcoming hospital reform and the increasing outpatient care. This strategy includes strengthening outpatient and emergency medical services, enhancing cooperation with larger nearby hospitals, developing alternative care models such as telemedicine or mobile medical services, and ensuring that patients can access necessary medical services without significant delays or travel.
As part of these changes, the department of internal medicine, with 50 planned beds, will be relocated to the Haßfurt site by December 31, 2025. The palliative care team will also be moved to Haßfurt by November 1. Chief Physician Dr. med. Stefan Hochreuther will continue to lead the department of internal medicine and the palliative care team at the Haßfurt site.
Frau Manana Aladashvili and Herr Dr. med. Ulrich Wagner will continue to practice in the new premises on the ground floor of the Ebern Hospital. The gynecology & obstetrics practice in the MVZ Eltmann is expanding to the Medical Care Center (MVZ) Ebern as of August 4, 2025.
The closure of the Ebern hospital has sparked protests in the region, with the action group "Stop Hospital Deaths in Bavaria" criticizing the decision. The announcement of the hospital closure has also led to renovation and renovation work being planned for the second floor of the Ebern Hospital, with the intention of operating a short-term care facility by the BRK in 2026. After the closure, the building in Ebern is to be converted into a specialist and nursing center.
The Haßburg Clinics' press release states that the supervisory board made this decision in a meeting on July 28, 2025. The physicians will maintain the high quality of care and also accept new patients after the summer holidays. The focus is on maintaining quality medical care for residents while adapting to the changing healthcare landscape and economic realities.
The Haßburg Clinics, in an attempt to keep up with the upcoming hospital reform and the rising demand for outpatient care, have decided to adapt their medical strategy, which includes enhancing cooperation with nearby hospitals, developing alternative care models like telemedicine or mobile medical services, and strengthening outpatient and emergency medical services.
In light of these changes, the department of internal medicine, initially planned for Ebern Hospital, will be relocated to the Haßfurt site by December 31, 2025. The strategic shifts in healthcare and economic conditions have led to the closure of Ebern Hospital by the end of 2025, a decision that has sparked protests in the region, pledging for better solutions in health-and-wellness and medical conditions management.
