Worker Perishes During Initial Shift at Manufacturing Plant

In the industrial town of Gimhae, South Gyeongsang Province, a tragic incident has occurred at an electronics parts manufacturer. A worker, in his 60s, lost his life on Monday morning, around 7:20 a.m., when he was loading cargo.

The worker was pinned between an electric lift and a truck, following an unexpected movement of the lift. The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation, and the autopsy results have not been released yet.

The Labor Ministry has ordered a work stoppage at the factory while the investigation is ongoing. The Ministry, along with local police, are working together to determine the causes of the accident and whether any potential violations of workplace safety laws have occurred.

South Korea's Industrial Safety and Health Act (ISHA) mandates strict safety standards for cargo loading and electric lift operation. Employers are required to provide safety training, maintain equipment, and implement preventative measures to ensure a safe working environment.

The incident has highlighted the importance of adhering to these regulations. Loading cargo safety involves proper securing and balanced loading methods to prevent shifting or falling cargo during handling. The use of electric lifts and equipment in container handling emphasizes operator training, equipment inspection, and safe operating procedures.

Investigations of violations or accidents are carried out by labor authorities who inspect, identify causes, and enforce penalties or corrective measures. Enforcement actions can include fines, work stoppages, or mandated corrective actions.

Frequent investigations in port and cargo handling industries underscore the ongoing fatality risks in such environments. Regulatory bodies use data to prioritize safety improvements to prevent future incidents.

The police are conducting an autopsy to determine the exact cause of the worker's death. The investigation is expected to provide insights into the incident and help prevent similar accidents in the future.
