Brandenburg Healthcare Reform: Changes Ahead for Wittstock/Dosse and Surrounding Areas

Brandenburg, Germany – Changes are on the horizon for the healthcare system in Brandenburg, with the KMG Klinikum Nordbrandenburg planning to close the hospital in Wittstock/Dosse by the end of next year. This decision is part of a broader healthcare reform aimed at reducing financial pressure on clinics and increasing specialization.

The closure of the hospital has sparked protests, as residents fear the potential impact on the region's medical care, infrastructure, and population. Mayor Philipp Wacker of Wittstock/Dosse has expressed concerns about "serious consequences" if alternative medical care is not maintained or newly created in the region.

However, the state's response in Brandenburg seems to focus on maintaining comprehensive care coverage through regional coordination. Brandenburg's Minister of Health, Britta Müller, is advocating for alternative medical care to remain in Wittstock/Dosse.

One potential alternative for inpatient and urgent care needs could be the Universitätsklinikum Ruppin-Brandenburg, which serves the Ostprignitz-Ruppin area and promises continuous emergency services such as trauma and stroke care with interdisciplinary treatment around the clock.

The SPD/BSW coalition, which governs Brandenburg, wants to maintain every hospital location, which can also be a polyclinic. However, only two specialist departments in internal medicine, cardiology, and gastroenterology, will remain in Wittstock/Dosse, with cardiology and gastroenterology to be transferred to the clinic in Pritzwalk. This means that patients with heart attacks, for example, would have to be transported from Wittstock to Pritzwalk for treatment.

Bundling these services at one location is intended to make emergency care safer. The Left Party state chairman, Sebastian Walter, has warned that longer distances and response times in an emergency could put lives at risk.

Future hospital planning will no longer be based on bed numbers, but on performance groups. This suggests a focus on modern care and efficiency in the reformed healthcare system.

As the situation develops, it is recommended to consult Brandenburg’s health ministry or local government updates for the most accurate and current information.

In the context of Brandenburg Healthcare Reform, there are concerns about the potential impact on the medical care in Wittstock/Dosse, particularly with the closing of the hospital and the transfer of certain specialist departments. The focus of the reform seems to be shifting towards efficiency and modern care, aiming to ensure health and wellness, while managing medical-conditions effectively.
