Wilmot Cancer Institute Promotes Dan Mulkerin to Inaugural Leadership Role

In a significant move for the Wilmot Cancer Institute, Dan Mulkerin has been promoted to the position of Medical Director and Associate Chief Medical Officer, effective September 1, 2023. This appointment is expected to strengthen the institute's position as a leading cancer treatment center in Upstate New York.

Mulkerin's new roles will see him overseeing clinical operations, enhancing the quality and safety of cancer care, and leading strategic initiatives to improve patient outcomes across the institute. He will also collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate advanced treatment protocols and expand access to cutting-edge therapies.

Mulkerin's leadership is anticipated to have a significant impact on the Wilmot Cancer Institute's operations. His focus on strengthening clinical programs, fostering innovation in cancer care delivery, and advancing research efforts is expected to solidify the institute's position as a leading cancer treatment center in the region.

The creation of this new position is in line with NCI-designated peer institutions across the country, according to Cancer Center Director, Jonathan Friedberg. The new Wilmot-Webster location, under Mulkerin's leadership, offers a broad array of clinical services and infrastructure to support Wilmot's research initiatives.

Mulkerin's vision is to provide high-quality cancer care closer to home, in the spirit of Meliora. He aims to offer a consistent experience to patients from initial diagnosis throughout their treatment, regardless of location. More than half of Wilmot's patients receive their care at regional locations, under Mulkerin's leadership.

Prior to joining Wilmot, Mulkerin worked in a similar role at the University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center. He joined Wilmot Cancer Institute two years ago as Associate Director, Regional Operations and Vice Chair, Regional Operations for the Department of Medicine at the University of Rochester. During his tenure, he recruited additional faculty members and extended the benefits of a university cancer center into communities where Wilmot patients live.

Mulkerin is particularly proud of the new Wilmot-Webster location he opened, which has significantly increased the availability of specialized services in the region. He will continue to treat patients at the cancer center in his new role.

In his new dual role, Mulkerin will report to the Cancer Center Director, Jonathan Friedberg, M.D., M.M.Sc, as Medical Director and to Strong Memorial Hospital's Chief Medical Officer, Michael Apostolakos, M.D., as Associate Chief Medical Officer. His responsibilities include improving quality in clinical care, managing clinical IT infrastructure, pharmacy interactions, creating a uniform patient flow in both outpatient and cellular therapy, developing a cohesive physician voice, and creating a collaborative network to discuss patient care.

Mulkerin's appointment is expected to enhance the provision of cutting-edge care in Upstate New York by acknowledging the strengths of providers and furthering integration across departments for patient care. His initiatives aim to enhance education opportunities for Wilmot providers and patients, and he looks to improve the patient experience by ensuring consistency across all treatment locations.

In his new roles, Dan Mulkerin will focus on improving patient outcomes across the Wilmot Cancer Institute by integrating advanced treatment protocols and expanding access to cutting-edge therapies, demonstrating his commitment to providing high-quality patient care. His goal is to advance research efforts and foster innovation in cancer care delivery, aligning with the institute's mission towards health and wellness in the fight against medical-conditions likes cancer.
