Virginia Seminary Launches 'Being With Science' Program With $24K AAAS Grant

The Department of Lifelong Learning at Virginia Theological Seminary has received a $24,000 grant from AAAS DoSER to launch a new program called 'Being With Science'. Led by Rev. Dr. Sarah Colvin, this initiative aims to foster conversations about science and faith within congregations.

The 'Being With Science' program will consist of 10 weekly guided sessions, each concluding with an invitation for personal study and community action through local Science and Faith teams. Topics will range from AI and dementia to chronic illness and human flourishing, all explored through the lens of faith.

The curriculum will be developed by leading scientists and delivered by 30 trained leaders recruited specifically for this project. Rev. Dr. Colvin, who also led a similar program funded by the Free State of Saxony, will oversee the program. The Department of Lifelong Learning anticipates a lasting relationship with the 'Being With Science' teams, planning to expand science-based resources beyond the grant period.

The 'Being With Science' program, part of AAAS DoSER's Science Engagement for Congregational Flourishing initiative, seeks to enrich congregational life by encouraging thoughtful dialogue between science and faith. With the support of the $24,000 grant, the program is set to commence, offering a unique opportunity for communities to explore complex scientific topics in a faith-based context.
