Urgent Appeal Issued by County Health Department

The Rhein-Kreis Neuss Health Department has been grappling with significant issues since February 1st, as they face severe disruptions in the use of the SORMAS software. This software, developed in 2014 during an Ebola outbreak in West Africa, was designed to network all relevant data and participants during an epidemic, including case numbers, contacts, symptoms, and various professionals involved in its management, such as laboratory personnel, doctors, and epidemiologists.

Originally intended to help manage data related to an epidemic, the software was also meant to provide a centralized platform for data, aiding in the efficient management of an epidemic. However, the latest version the health department was using contained a significant error, causing frequent connection breaks with the server and hindering work processes.

These disruptions have resulted in backlogs in the recording of corona infections and contact tracing. If the software were working at its usual speed, the health department could record up to three times as many cases as they currently can.

In an effort to resolve the problem, the software provider and the health department have been working closely to identify and fix the error. They have since developed and released an updated version of SORMAS that corrects the issue. The health department is in the process of implementing this update to ensure the system works smoothly again and maintains effective pandemic data management.

It's important to note that these issues are not due to local IT infrastructure issues or the high number of employees using the software. In fact, the software was designed to manage data from various participants involved in an epidemic, making it capable of handling a large volume of data.

The disturbances are currently also occurring at other health departments, while some report trouble-free operation. The federal-state conference set the goal of installing SORMAS in 90% of the 375 German health departments by mid-January 2021, but this was not achieved. In North Rhine-Westphalia, the active use of SORMAS was promoted as a criterion for becoming a model region for openings, but this was overtaken by subsequent events.

The district director and crisis staff leader Dirk Brügge has turned to the North Rhine-Westphalia Health Center and the management of the commissioned company Netzlink for a prompt solution. The health department remains committed to resolving these issues and ensuring the efficient management of pandemic data.
