In Indonesia, a 63-year-old imam survived a shocking encounter with a python nearly five meters in length over the weekend. The reptile attacked him while he was collecting firewood in the Polewali Mandar district along with his son and relatives, according to local media reports based on eyewitness accounts.

The area's high grass concealed the python, which suddenly bit the imam on the arm. However, he managed to free himself and eventually killed the snake with a machete. A similar attack occurred in 2024, during which two women were killed by pythons on the same island, Sulawesi – both victims were found inside the bellies of giant snakes.

Pythons, one of the largest snakes found in Africa and Asia, are known for constricting their victims and suffocating them before consuming their prey, which can range from wild boars and deer to humans. While they are not venomous, they possess powerful teeth with numerous sharp fangs for gripping and swallowing their meals.

Indonesia, the world's largest island country, is home to a variety of python species, with the reticulated python being the largest, capable of reaching over six meters in length. Encounters with these snakes have become increasingly dangerous due to habitat loss caused by deforestation, according to conservationists.

While python attacks on humans are rare, they pose a threat, particularly in rural or agricultural settings where humans and snakes often come into close contact. The reticulated python is the main species of concern in Indonesia due to its size, habitat overlap with humans, and documented incidents of fatal attacks.

Recent fatal encounters with pythons in Indonesia have primarily involved the reticulated python, a species known to reside in Southeast Asia. These massive snakes are capable of swallowing large prey, including humans, although such events are rare. Other large constrictor species, such as the green anaconda, African rock python, Indian python, and Australian scrub python, can also pose threats to humans, but their fatal attacks in Indonesia have primarily been attributed to the reticulated python.

Incidents similar to the one in Polewali Mandar have occurred in Indonesia before, such as a fatal attack in 2017 and another in 2018. The victims in these cases were an adult male and a female adult, respectively, both of whom were swallowed and killed by reticulated pythons.
