Two adolescents from the neighborhood are traveling to Washington D.C. to serve as California's representatives at the T1D 2025 Children's Congress, a significant event.
In a significant move, two young Californians, Jenesie from Pico Rivera and Shravya from Cerritos, have been selected to represent the state at the Breakthrough T1D 2025 Children's Congress in Washington, D.C. This three-day event, running from July 7-9, 2025, aims to raise awareness and funding for Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) and advocate for continued federal support [1].
Jenesie, a senior at El Rancho High School in Pico Rivera, and Shravya, a student at Gretchen Whitney High School in Cerritos, were both diagnosed with T1D at a young age. Despite the challenges, they have emerged as dynamic speakers and advocates, with Shravya being an award-winning public forum debater [2].
The Breakthrough T1D Children's Congress began in 1999, providing a platform for young people to share their personal experiences living with T1D, a chronic condition that affects nearly nine million people worldwide and currently has no cure [3]. This year's event will also feature five international participants, in addition to the 170 youth delegates [4].
The delegates will meet with members of Congress and federal leaders to share their stories and advocate for continued federal support for T1D research and policies that support those affected by the disease [5]. Breakthrough T1D, the leading global organisation for T1D research and advocacy, invests in promising medical breakthroughs and fights for policies that support those affected by T1D [6].
Meanwhile, in local news, the National Endowment for the Arts has faced cuts under the Trump administration, causing concern among Southern California creatives [7]. However, the focus remains on the upcoming Memorial Day Ceremony organised by the Artesia Cemetery District. The community, veterans, and press are invited to attend, with Rep. Derek Tran delivering his first Memorial Day address [8].
