Turkey's pioneering female sky diver: Yıldız Uçman
In the annals of Turkish aviation history, Yildiz Ucman stands out as a trailblazer. Born with the surname Kayalar in Thessaloniki, Greece, Yildiz grew up in the Cumaovası district of Izmir. Her family had migrated from Thessaloniki to Istanbul and then to Izmir during the Turkey-Greece population exchange.
Yildiz's life took an extraordinary turn when she applied to the civil aviation school in Ergazi, Ankara. It was here that her journey as a pioneering female aviator began. Her parachute training started at the suggestion of Russian aviation teachers, and she soon made history.
On October 4, 1935, Yildiz performed the historic jump from a Russian R-5 plane, becoming the first woman in Turkey to parachute. The insurance for the first female pilots was made as minaret workers due to the dangerous nature of their profession. Interestingly, her professional performance was highly impressive, according to Vecihi Hürkuş's memoirs.
Yildiz was one of the four female pilots trained by Sabiha Gökçen, along with Edibe Subaşı, Nezihe Viranyalı, and Sahavet Karapas. After her career in aviation, she retired from the Turkish Aeronautical Association as a minaret worker. Retirement as a minaret worker was considered very prestigious at that time.
However, when it comes to Yildiz's birth date, there is conflicting information in various sources. Some sources state that her surname was Eruçman instead of Kayalar. Despite these inconsistencies, Yildiz is known as the first female aviator in Turkey to jump with a parachute.
Information about Yildiz primarily comes from Aviation History Researcher Mustafa Kılıç. It is hoped that more detailed information about this remarkable woman will be shared in the future, adding to the rich tapestry of Turkish aviation history.
Yildiz joined the Eskişehir İnönü parachute camp and then the Etimesgut glider camp, further cementing her place in the annals of Turkish aviation. Today, she serves as an inspiration for women everywhere, breaking barriers and defying expectations.
