Trump Denies Reports of His Demise: 'It's Fake News'
US President Donald Trump addressed rumors about his death during a press conference at the White House on September 2, dismissing them as 'fake news.' The speculation had been sparked by recent images of Trump's bruised hand and swollen ankles, as well as his absence from public appearances and press conferences for several days starting August 25.
Trump's right hand has appeared heavily made up on several occasions, a fact that was also highlighted during the press conference. The White House has previously attributed discoloration on Trump's right hand to 'tissue irritation from frequent handshaking' and the use of aspirin as part of a standard cardiovascular treatment. The swollen legs were said to be due to chronic venous insufficiency, a common, benign vein condition.
The topic '#trumpdead' continued to trend on X, owned by Trump's former political ally Elon Musk, on September 2. The health of US presidents is closely watched, especially since 2017 when the White House saw its two oldest ever occupants, with Joe Biden being the other.
Trump's good health and energy levels have been a point of pride for him. He frequently boasts about his vitality, and he jokingly responded to a reporter's question about finding out he was dead over the weekend, saying 'Really? I didn't see that.'
In a post on Truth Social on August 31, Trump stated, 'NEVER FELT BETTER IN MY LIFE.' Presidential physician Sean Barbabella also confirmed that Trump 'remains in excellent health,' as per a letter released by the White House.
However, liberal commentator Keith Olbermann questioned the White House's handling of Trump's health, stating, 'how could his own White House have possibly made it look more like he was or is desperately ill or had surgery or is having surgery or what?'
Trump has also alleged that the opposition Democrats covered up the mental and physical decline of former President Biden. This accusation comes amidst the 2024 election, where Biden's health was a key issue, forcing him to drop his campaign for a second term after a disastrous debate performance against Trump.
Despite the speculation, Trump was active in the media, doing a long interview with The Daily Caller and numerous shows over the August 30 weekend. Trump was also asked about reports of his death by Fox News presenter Peter Doocy on September 2.
The scrutiny over the health of US presidents continues, with the public and media keeping a close eye on the wellbeing of those in power.
