Thuringia, a popular holiday destination in Germany, has seen an increase in cases of Lyme disease and the less common viral infection FSME during the summer season.

Lyme disease, the most commonly transmitted infection in Germany through tick bites, has been on the rise in Thuringia. According to data from the Berlin Robert Koch Institute (RKI), over half of the reported Lyme disease cases this year occurred during the summer holidays. A total of 142 cases were recorded during the past six holiday weeks.

The viral infection FSME, also known as early summer meningoencephalitis, is transmitted by infected ticks like Lyme disease. Unfortunately, five cases of FSME occurred during the summer holidays in Thuringia, bringing the total for the year to 13, as reported by the RKI.

The Thuringian Minister has stated that not every patient needs to reach the doctor for medical care, but it's essential to monitor symptoms closely. Typical signs of Lyme disease include a red skin ring around the bite site, fever, and other unspecified symptoms. Other symptoms of Lyme disease include muscle and joint pain.

FSME symptoms range from a flu-like illness to inflammation of the brain and spinal cord. The entire year 2024 saw 399 Lyme disease and 13 FSME infections recorded for Thuringia, according to the RKI.

There is a protective vaccine for FSME, but not for Lyme disease. The infection is treated with antibiotics. The total number of reported Lyme disease infections in Thuringia this year is 282, as reported by the health insurance company Barmer.

It's important to note that in addition to the cases recorded by the RKI, there is likely some underreporting of Lyme disease cases. Outdoor activities such as play, swimming, and hiking, which sometimes result in tick bites, were popular during the summer holidays in Thuringia.

For the most accurate and up-to-date numbers, one would need to consult the Thuringian State Health Department (Thüringer Landesamt für Gesundheit und Versorgung) or the Robert Koch Institute, which publishes data on Lyme disease incidence in Germany annually and sometimes regionally. However, specific epidemiological data for Lyme disease cases in Thuringia during the summer holidays of 2024 or the proportional ratio to the yearly total was not available at the time of this report.

Stay safe and enjoy the outdoors, but be mindful of the risks posed by ticks. If you experience any symptoms after a tick bite, seek medical advice promptly.
