Study Reveals Surprising Mosquito Attractants at Lowlands Festival
Scientists have discovered new ways to attract or repel mosquitoes, as revealed in a study conducted at the 2023 Lowlands Festival in the Netherlands. The Mosquito Magnet Trial found that certain habits make people more appealing to mosquitoes, while others make them less so.
The study, involving 465 festivalgoers, placed participants' bare forearms inside cages filled with mosquitoes. The results showed that those who had showered within six hours and applied sunscreen on their forearms were significantly less attractive to mosquitoes. Conversely, participants who had consumed at least one beer in the 12 hours prior to the test were 1.35 times more attractive to mosquitoes than those who hadn't. Sharing a bed, or 'bedding down' with someone else the night before also increased attraction by 1.34 times.
The study suggests that mosquitoes are drawn to those who avoid sunscreen, drink beer, and share their bed, indicating a preference for 'hedonists' among us. The authors recommend showering regularly, applying sunscreen, skipping beer, sleeping solo, and avoiding cannabis to minimize mosquito bites. The next edition of the Lowlands Festival is scheduled for August 21 to August 23, 2026.
The Mosquito Magnet Trial has provided valuable insights into what attracts mosquitoes to humans. By understanding and adopting the recommended habits, festivalgoers and others can reduce their risk of mosquito bites and the associated health risks.
