Struggle to Peace: Heather's Journey Along the Pathway, her poignant narrative of grief and serenity

Facing grief is a deeply intimate struggle, but nature often serves as a sanctuary for many. Well, guess who else found solace in the great outdoors? None other than the fabulous Heather Kleinolson, American Hiking's social media manager! She pens down her heartfelt story of finding peace and strength after losing her dear mother to cancer.

"The year leading up to my mom's passing was an emotional rollercoaster. My grief was inescapable, and it was tougher than tough when I realized that none of my friends could fully comprehend my pain. I was the one-and-only kiddo, after all. Even my siblings and I, each having our unique bond with her, experienced grief differently. Oh boy, it felt absolutely lonely on that turbulent journey!

Mom's passing left me with a responsibility to heal myself so I could continue caring for my two adorable kiddos and my great team. Most of this 'self-care' journey led me to the trails. And let me tell you, Ol' Mother Nature knows her stuff! Before she passed, my mom left me a special box filled with memories, including a photo of me as a kiddo. The picture gave me a run for my money, bringin' on the waterworks. I mean, the tiny tot in that snapshot didn't seem troubled by a care in the world! With a happy smile, she'd run around with the freedom of the wind, living life to the fullest.

That little beast needed zilch more than the great outdoors, fresh air, sunshine, food, water, and love. Ding, ding, ding! We've got a winner, mother nature! You see, that snapshot reminded me that our dear friend Mother Nature is vital for my personal growth, beyond just navigating grief. And even though grief can be a lonely maze, when I'm hittin' the trails solo, it doesn't feel lonely out here. Each time I'm among these great greens, I feel connected to everything around, and I can feel my mom's spirit. This slice of heaven is a place where I can reconnect with that free-spirited young me and keep movin' forward."
