It's Here! Time to Spend, Spend, Spend!
States Ranked with the Most Considerate Present Donors: A Shocking Reveal!
Holiday season has arrived, and despite supply chain bottlenecks threatening to shake up the festive spirit, you've gotta get your shop on.
Tis the Season for Extravagance
According to Canva, Americans shell out an average of $852 on Christmas gifts, with the United States racking up a whopping $1 trillion on gifts back in 2019.
As you begin to create your shopping list, take a peek at the U.S. gift-buying trends uncovered by Canva through Google search data analysis.
Insights from the Virtual Aisle
Canva used data such as search trends and keyword volume to gain valuable insights.
The Thoughtful Empire State
To determine the most thoughtful state for giving, Canva analyzed the number of searches for "personalized gifts." New York emerged as the most thoughtful with New Hampshire, Kentucky, New Jersey, and Vermont following closely behind.
"Even though Manhattan has the rep as a fast-paced city, New York takes the gold medal for thoughtful gifts," says Canva.
Apparently, Julian Givi, PhD, assistant professor of marketing at West Virginia University, has studied gifting, and his findings reveal that recipients feel more appreciated when they receive thoughtful gifts.
Forgotten Matriarchs
It seems moms might be the forgotten family members when it comes to gifting. Canva discovered this by measuring the volume of searches for "last minute gifts for mom" in December.
"Despite moms often being our rock in tough times, sometimes we forget to return the favor come gift-giving season," muses Canva.
D.C.'s Last-Minute Rush
Areas with the highest volume of last-minute gift searches included D.C., Maine, Vermont, Missouri, and North Carolina.
Practical Midwesterners
On the flip side, states like Nebraska, Kansas, and the Dakotas were the least likely to wait until the last minute for their holiday shopping.
Supply Chain Impact
While it's uncertain how supply chain issues will affect gifting this year, there might be a shift towards earlier gift purchasing to ensure a Christmas free of any last-minute stress.
Holiday Shopping Strategies
Regardless of your shopping habits, follow these tips to conquer holiday shopping:
Plan Ahead
Making a list of who to buy for and what to buy them earns you savings and time.
Shop Early, Shop Often
Buying gifts early reduces stress, saves money, and allows for the best deals.
Think Sentimental
Research shows that consumers don't give enough sentimental gifts, so let's change that. Think beyond the usual, safe gifts and opt for more personal and meaningful presents.
Worry Less About the Wow Factor
Focus on the long-term benefits and usefulness of the gift instead of aiming for immediate reaction.
Your Gift is Enough
Recipients value even the smallest gifts given out of the blue or at unexpected times.
