PopTech Announces Inaugural Class of Science and Public Leadership Fellows

PopTech, an international thought leadership and innovation accelerator network, has announced the inaugural class of its Science and Public Leadership Fellows program. This mentorship series aims to nurture emerging scientific leaders into effective public leaders, bridging the gap between scientific research and societal leadership.

The program, now in its third year, has received support from esteemed organisations such as Microsoft Research, Intel, the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, National Geographic, the National Science Foundation, the Rita Allen Foundation, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and the New York Academy of Sciences.

The 18 early and mid-career scientists selected for the program hail from various fields, including climatology, marine biology, and sustainable ecomaterials. Among them are Kim Cobb, a climatologist and Scripps alumna now an associate professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology, and Amro Hamdoun, an assistant professor of marine biology at UC San Diego.

Garren, who studies coastal and marine issues, was awarded $15,000 as a Switzer Environmental Fellow. The Switzer Foundation awards annual fellowships for emerging environmental leaders to advance their skills and develop their expertise to address critical conservation challenges.

The Science and Public Leadership Fellows will participate in a leadership development retreat at the Banbury Center of the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and the annual PopTech 2010 conference. The program aims to address the decline in public understanding of science and encourages interdisciplinary collaboration between science, technology, social science, and public policy.

President Obama recently stated that science holds the key to survival, security, and prosperity. PopTech's commitment to devising new approaches to the planet's toughest challenges is a long-standing hallmark. The fellows will not only engage in rigorous scientific research but also learn to effectively communicate their findings to policymakers and the public.

The PopTech Social Innovation Fellows program, a separate initiative, has been instrumental in fostering a one-of-a-kind network of innovators in various fields, including science, technology, green energy, sustainable ecomaterials, violence cessation, design, and the corporate, entrepreneurial, and social sectors.
