Restoration of Phased Sections at Medical Academy Building, Krasnodar Underway
In Krasnodar, the refurbishment of the historical Eparchial School is progressing, as revealed by the regional administration's press service. The Kuban State Medical University currently occupies the cultural heritage site.
Several stages of restoration have been undertaken, with the historic staircase receiving special attention. Specialists have cleaned and restored the plaster layers, replicating the original designs on walls, ceilings, wrought iron, and cast iron elements of the staircase. The flooring and internal door blocks have also been replaced.
Ongoing work on the interiors is expected to further safeguard this landmark and maintain its distinctive historical charm, as stated by Kuban Vice-Governor Roman Luzinov.
Originally built in 1901, the Eparchial School was designed by the Kuban architect Vasily Filippov, and features intricate stone masonry, marking it as an architectural jewel of the region. Its pseudo-Russian style with brick adornments is undeniable.
During the Civil War, the building provided space for a hospital, and it sustained partial damage during World War II. It was then restored between 1947 and 1952.
Restoration efforts began in the early 2000s. Research and fundraising campaigns marked the initial stages, followed by the implementation of structural repairs, roof restorations, and facade renovations. The intensive restoration phase focusing on the building's interiors commenced in 2020, with efforts to preserve original details, integrate modern infrastructure, and revitalize the surrounding grounds.
Presently, the building boasts improved structural stability, restored exteriors, significant progress in interior refurbishment, and plans to transform it into a museum dedicated to the school's rich history. Community engagement is also crucial, with ongoing initiatives offering educational programs and volunteer opportunities.
Future plans include completing the restoration by 2027, while turning the Eparchial School into a cultural and educational hub in the city, hosting conferences, workshops, and religious education programs. Long-term preservation is also being considered, with the establishment of a foundation to manage maintenance and public awareness initiatives.
