Research on osteopathic therapies alleviating persistent shoulder pain conducted by Charité
At the Institute of Social Medicine, Epidemiology, and Health Economics of the Charité, a study titled "OsteoShoulder" is currently underway. Led by PD Dr. med. Gabriele Rotter, MSc, the study aims to explore the effectiveness of osteopathy for individuals suffering from chronic shoulder pain.
The study, which started in fall 2024, has already enrolled all planned participants. It compares two groups: one receives five osteopathic treatments over three months, supplemented by a home exercise program, while the control group carries out only the home exercise program independently.
The central question of the study is whether the combination of osteopathy and home exercises differs significantly from the pure home therapy. The study is expected to be completed at the beginning of 2027, and the evaluation will be carried out scientifically independently according to the highest standards.
Professor Dr. med. Anke Bernstein, who leads the OsteoShoulder company at Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, is overseeing the project. The Bundesverband Osteopathie e.V. - bvo is also supporting the study.
Osteopathy, while not yet legally regulated in Germany, is a complementary therapy that focuses on the body's structure and function as a whole. For those seeking qualified osteopathy practitioners, the Bundesverband Osteopathie e.V. - bvo provides guidance. You can find a list of qualified practitioners on their website at this link.
Christine Berek, the 1st Chairwoman of the Bundesverband Osteopathie e.V. - bvo, emphasises the importance of the study. "We are excited about this research as it will provide valuable insights into the benefits of osteopathy for individuals with chronic shoulder pain," she said.
The study aims to measure improvements in pain, mobility, and shoulder function after twelve weeks, as well as factors such as quality of life and subjective well-being. Further information about osteopathy can be found on the blog "Osteopathie Magazin" at this link.
