Patient Undergoes Shoulder MRI Scan, Results in Days
A patient has undergone a shoulder MRI scan, a procedure that takes around 45 minutes to an hour. They can now leave the hospital, with results expected within a few days to a week.
During the scan, the patient lies on a table that slides into a large tube. Images are recorded using magnets and radio waves, focusing specifically on the bones, blood vessels, and tissues in the shoulder region. This detailed approach allows doctors to clarify unclear findings from previous examinations, detect hidden injuries, and plan therapy, especially in cases of persistent pain or suspected ligament or tendon tears. The scan can diagnose a range of issues, from dislocation to degenerative joint diseases, rotator cuff tears, bone fractures, sports-related injuries, unexplained pain and swelling, decreased range of motion, infections, or tumors. Unlike X-rays and CT scans, an MRI scan uses no radiation, making it a safer alternative, particularly for pregnant women and children. However, it's not without risks, including interference with metal implants, allergic reactions to contrast dye, and temporary effects on breastfeeding women. Preparation for the scan involves removing metal from the body, addressing claustrophobia, and possibly receiving antianxiety medication or sedation.
