In a recent decision, the Hamm Labour Court in North Rhine-Westphalia upheld a ban on abortions at the Catholic-run Klinikum Lippstadt-Christian Hospital[1][2]. The ban, consistent with Catholic doctrine, allows abortions only in cases where the "life and limb of the pregnant woman are in danger."

This ruling has been met with strong opposition from Chief Physician Joachim Volz, a gynecologist who had performed medically indicated abortions during his 13 years at the Protestant hospital before its merger with the Catholic clinic[1][2][3]. The ban now applies to Volz's private practice as well. Volz has announced plans to appeal the ruling, arguing that it contradicts his medical duties and restricts access to legal healthcare.

The decision has sparked significant public protest in Lippstadt, with approximately 2,000 people demonstrating against the Catholic clinic's abortion ban[1][2][4]. The protests were held under the banner "Stop the Catholic Abortion Ban." Over 230,000 signatures have been gathered in support of Volz's petition titled "I am – my is not sin!"

The protests highlighted the tension between the hospital’s religious-based policies and broader access to women's reproductive healthcare services in the region. The ruling effectively allows Catholic hospitals in Germany to restrict abortions beyond the legal allowances in civilian healthcare, potentially reducing access to pregnancy terminations for cases like fetal malformations that are currently permitted under German law. This raises concerns about women’s healthcare rights and the availability of abortion services in Lippstadt and similar contexts where hospitals are governed by religious entities.

In terms of the implications, the ruling may limit legal abortion access in the region, impacting women's healthcare rights. Gynecologist Volz expressed concern that services like abortions may no longer be structurally available in politically driven clinic mergers involving Catholic operators. Volz is resisting the ban in court and has filed a lawsuit against a new service instruction from his employer, the Evangelical Hospital Lippstadt.

The dispute between Volz and the Lippstadt Clinic is not viewed as an isolated case by Volz. He expressed optimism about his case, stating, "Yes, I believe I have a good chance." Despite a small counter-demonstration of five people, the overall gathering was reported to be peaceful by the police.
