In a commendable move towards prioritizing workplace safety, Governor Andy Beshear encourages Kentucky employers to request free occupational safety and health surveys from KYSAFE. These surveys, courtesy of the Kentucky Occupational Safety and Health Program, have proven to be a valuable resource for employers, helping them identify potential hazards and mitigate risks proactively.

In 2024 alone, 531 Kentucky employers voluntarily requested these free surveys, a testament to their effectiveness in promoting safer workplaces. By agreeing to remedy the issues identified during these surveys, employers were able to avoid more than $26 million in potential workplace safety violation penalties.

The surveys conducted by KYSAFE's OSH consultants identify various hazards, including machine safeguarding, electrical safety, fire prevention and protection, confined space entry, indoor air quality, respiratory protection, hearing protection, and more. These potential risks, if left unaddressed, could have exposed 96,187 Kentucky workers to potential hazards.

The surveys are a win-win for everyone involved. Employers can pre-emptively identify and mitigate workplace hazards without risking a costly penalty. For the workers, it means the peace of mind that their employer is taking proactive steps to ensure they have a safer workplace.

The surveys are a voluntary service provided at no cost to employers, making it an accessible resource for improving workplace safety without financial burden. By addressing the hazards identified during the survey, employers can create safer work environments, potentially reducing accidents, injuries, and associated costs.

Moreover, the survey can assist employers in understanding and aligning with occupational safety and health regulations, reducing the risk of violations and fines. Engaging with KYSAFE demonstrates a commitment to worker health and safety, which can boost employee morale and productivity.

Additional information about KYSAFE's services can be found on their website, kysafe.ky.gov. Employers can also benefit from KYSAFE's free technical assistance to correct identified hazards, if they lack the technical expertise.

During these surveys, KYSAFE consultants identified 4,927 safety risks.
