Nine Children Dead in Madhya Pradesh After Cough Syrup Tragedy
In a tragic turn of events, nine young patients under the age of five have lost their lives in Madhya Pradesh's Chhindwara district after being prescribed cough syrups. The cause of death has been identified as Acute Kidney Injury (AKI), not Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES). Doctors have been advised to exercise caution while prescribing combination drugs and using injections.
The alarming situation came to light on September 4, with the death toll now standing at nine, including three recent fatalities. Most of the deceased were initially treated by a local doctor, Ravindra Soni. Three critically ill patients remain hospitalized in Nagpur, relying on dialysis and ventilator support.
Investigations ruled out contaminated water, vector-borne diseases, and rats as possible causes. Samples of 12 medicines have been sent for testing to determine the exact cause behind the deaths. An advisory has been issued to restrict the use and prescription of two specific cough syrups in the entire district.
The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of cough syrups and the need for stricter regulation. Authorities are working to prevent further tragedies and ensure the safety of the remaining affected patients.
