New Film 'Close Shot' Exposes Brutal DDR Dictatorship

A new drama, 'Close Shot', hits German cinemas on August 12, 2021. Directed by Franziska Stünkel, the film delves into the brutal reality of the DDR dictatorship without preaching, thanks to its dense storytelling and exceptional performances.

The film follows Franz Walter, a young scientist who, after graduation, receives a tantalising offer from the Main Administration of Reconnaissance (HVA) of the GDR. The package includes a professorship and a luxurious apartment in East Berlin, but with a catch: Walter must work for the HVA for a year.

Walter's first task is to bring back escaped footballer Horst Langfeld to the GDR. However, after witnessing the HVA's ruthless methods and Langfeld's untimely death, Walter begins to question his assignment. The HVA employs manipulative tactics, even falsely diagnosing Langfeld's wife with breast cancer to lure him back.

The regime sentences Walter to death for espionage, ultimately executing him with a surprise close-range shot. Blackmailed into continuing his work, Walter's life spirals into alcoholism, straining his relationship with his wife. In a desperate move, he steals secret documents from the office and hides them at home, leading to his arrest by the Stasi.

In 'Close Shot', director Stünkel presents a gripping tale of one man's descent into the dark heart of the DDR dictatorship. The film's release on August 12, 2021 promises a stark and unflinching look at a brutal regime, brought to life by outstanding performances.
