The NHS National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) is set to revolutionise patient care with the implementation of cutting-edge technology solutions, including intelligent bedside terminals and advanced AI construction technology.
Key patient-focused innovations at the NRC include the deployment of intelligent bedside terminals (iPads) in patient bedrooms. These devices go beyond entertainment, supporting independence and rehabilitation. Patients will be able to control their environment (blinds, lighting, heating), access personalised educational content relevant to their recovery, view personalised diaries about schedules and care activities, and even order meals directly. The integrated electronic patient records allow live updates on discharge dates, medications, diets, and care teams. Moreover, patients can video call loved ones, fostering connections that aid in the recovery process, particularly for those with traumatic brain injury.
For the construction and operational efficiency of the centre, the project is leveraging Buildots’ AI-powered construction platform. This advanced digital solution integrates 360° site imagery with building information models (BIM) and schedules to provide real-time progress tracking and predictive analytics. This aids in ensuring efficient, high-quality, and on-time delivery of the £105 million facility by allowing proactive management of construction risks and delays, ultimately supporting the creation of a world-class rehabilitation environment.
Airwave Healthcare has been selected to provide the intelligent bedside terminals for the new centre. Dean Moody, healthcare services director at Airwave Healthcare, emphasised the importance of technology investments in hospital environments for patient engagement and recovery enhancement. Moody stated that the needs of patients at the National Rehabilitation Centre require a sharper focus on technology to stimulate and engage patients in their care. The NRC will be run and staffed by Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.
