Saxony-Anhalt Faces Persistent Doctor Shortage, Subsidy Initiative Shows Some Progress
Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, is grappling with a critical shortage of doctors. One of several initiatives to address this issue is a year-old subsidy meant to incentivize physicians to set up or continue practices in regions struggling with supply shortages. According to the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KV) in Saxony-Anhalt, this measure has shown initial success in alleviating bottlenecks, although it falls short of the challenges ahead.
As of April 30, 2025, about 950,000 euros out of the total allocation of 2.52 million euros has been disbursed. This represents nearly 38% of the budget, and an additional 290,000 euros has been approved for more practice openings. The KV expects significant improvements in eye care in the Altmark, pediatric care in the Börde region, and various aspects of general practice in the near future.
Key recipients of the subsidy include two eye doctors in the Stendal district and 24 general practitioners in regions like Bernburg, Köthen, and Osterburg, Salzwedel, Sangerhausen, and Zerbst. Two pediatricians and two child and adolescent psychiatrists in the Börde region have also benefited from the initiative. In total, 45 funding applications were submitted, of which 29 were approved.
The subsidy's foundation was laid by the state committee of doctors and health insurers in Saxony-Anhalt. General practitioners, eye doctors, ear, nose, and throat specialists, pediatricians, neurologists, and child and adolescent psychiatrists are eligible to receive funding. The program runs until June 30, 2026, with the KV Saxony-Anhalt and health insurers contributing equally.
However, projections by the KV suggest that Saxony-Anhalt might face a significant shortage of around 520 positions in the next five years, more than double the current number, with a third of doctors set to retire by 2030. On the other hand, it is anticipated that around 870 doctors will join the workforce. The overall trend among young doctors is leaning towards part-time employment, with many preferring full-time employment rather than taking over their own practices.
The KV's conclusion is that the statutory health insurance system in Saxony-Anhalt faces escalating challenges due to an insufficient number of doctors joining the workforce to maintain the existing level of supply.
