Medical facility initiates charitable drive to finance construction of fresh pediatric hospital

The University of Rochester Medical Center has embarked on a significant project, the largest in its history, to build a new hospital for Golisano Children's Hospital. The groundbreaking is expected to take place in August 2012.

A fundraising campaign aims to raise $100 million for this transformation, with a $20 million gift from hospital namesake B. Thomas Golisano already announced in July. The new hospital, more than 200,000 sq. ft., will be located on Crittenden Boulevard, adjacent to Strong Memorial Hospital.

About half of the $100 million goal has been raised to-date, with a groundswell of volunteers, physicians, employees, parents, and former patients stepping forward to help. The campaign is a significant portion of the medical center's overall $650 million campaign, which is part of The Meliora Challenge: The Campaign for the University of Rochester, a $1.2 billion comprehensive campaign.

The new hospital will have an identity separate from Strong Memorial Hospital and facilities to match the caliber of its programs. The fundraising campaign will focus on enhancing care, research, and education in seven priority areas: Cancer, Neonatology, Autism, Eating Disorders, Cardiovascular Disease, Surgery, and Supportive Care.

The campaign aims to recruit additional experienced pediatric surgeons and advance research, education, and family-centered care in the field of autism. Bradford C. Berk, M.D., Ph.D., CEO of the medical center, expressed that the inpatient pediatric facilities and programs need to be improved to support world-class medicine.

Joel Seligman, president of the University of Rochester, stated that the planned transformation of Golisano Children's Hospital aligns with the University's motto, "Ever Better." Mark Siewert, owner of Siewert Equipment Company and current chair of the Golisano Children's Hospital board, Michael Smith, owner of the Cabot Group and member of the hospital's board, and Elizabeth "Lissa" McAnarney, M.D., former pediatrician-in-chief of the children's hospital, professor, and chair emerita of the Department of Pediatrics at the medical center, have been recruited as volunteer leaders of the campaign.

The new hospital will also develop neonatal programs in lung injury prevention and neurological issues. Children with cancer will have access to early-phase clinical trials as a result of the campaign. However, for the most recent updates on the progress or current status of this fundraising campaign or project, it would be best to check the official University of Rochester Medical Center or Golisano Children's Hospital websites or their latest press releases directly.
