Dealing with the Deep End: DLRG's Water Rescues Skyrocket in Schleswig-Holstein
Lifeguards from the DLRG save 211 individuals in the northern region - Life-saving efforts of the German Lifeguard Association (DLRG) in the northern region results in the rescue of 211 individuals.
Got some trouble in the water? Look no further than the DLRG! These badass lifeguards are on a roll, rescuing a whopping 211 people from perilous situations in Schleswig-Holstein last year- a staggering 65 additional lives saved compared to the year before!
These heroes don't play around - whether it's the frothy waves of the Baltic Sea or the tranquil rivers and lakes of the region. But it's not just water-based rescues they're known for- they've also been saving lives off the shore, tackling everything from heart attacks on the beach to other medical emergencies.
While these numbers are impressive, it's a bittersweet victory: sadly, 25 people drowned last year, compared to 28 in 2023. But make no mistake, these warriors are far from beaten.
With a dedicated team of over 5,855 members, these lifesavers watched over people along waterways and spent an impressive almost 188,000 hours providing water rescue services throughout the year. In total, they assisted an astounding 2,211 people.
But the DLRG's commitment to saving lives doesn't stop at Schleswig-Holstein's borders. Nationwide, these unsung heroes rescued 1,446 people from life-threatening situations last year, up from the 1,120 saved in 2023. Among those saved were 699 people rescued from the clutches of drowning, compared to 870 in 2022. Unfortunately, their efforts fell short for at least 411 people who drowned.
Proud to be the largest water rescue organization in the world, the DLRG boasts an impressive membership of over 627,000- with nearly half being children and youth under 18. Look for them at the Hamburg Port Anniversary in 2025, showcasing their vessels to highlight their commitment to water rescue and disaster response.
So, if you find yourself in a bind, don't panic- just yell for the DLRG! They've got your back, 24/7.
