Mother of Four Undergoes Expensive Surgery to Remove Breast Implants Due to Illness

Lauren opts for breast implant removal, stating uncaringly about potential size reduction

ZDF series "37 Grad" reports on Lauren (36), a woman from Laufach, Germany, who had her breast implants removed ten years after their initial insertion.

Following a decade post her breast augmentation, Lauren, a mother of four, underwent surgery to remove the implants that had been causing her ill health. A painful and costly procedure but one she deems essential.

In brief

  • Lauren suffered from Breast Implant Illness (BII) after breast implantation.
  • She had severe pain, could not hold utensils, and was hospitalized.
  • The implants, found to be contaminated, were removed in Hamburg.
  • The World Health Organization (WHO) has yet to acknowledge BII as an illness.
  • Lauren is now living a normal life following the removal.

Lauren, the landlady of Gasthaus Seebachblick, recounts her early 2024 ordeal, explaining that she was unable to lift her arms or grip cutlery due to debilitating pain. A hospital visit leading to her realization that her breast implants were the culprit.

Inserted in her mid-twenties, the implants were put in after Lauren lost several cup sizes from two pregnancies. The initial surgery was complicated, with extreme pain and complications such as a suture rupture and inflammation in one breast.

Fighting against an opposing medical community, Lauren travelled to Hamburg to have the contaminated implants removed. "Whether my breasts will be smaller afterwards is completely irrelevant to me," she states.

Dr. Georgios Kolios, Lauren's treating plastic surgeon, confirms her poor health, stating, "Mrs. Smola is a truly sick woman, even though you wouldn't think so to look at her."

With Breast Implant Illness (BII) not currently recognized as a disease by the WHO and the health insurance company refusing coverage for the at least 10,000 euro explantation, Lauren endured a costly and arduous battle.

Two months after the six-and-a-half-hour surgery, Lauren is finally leading a normal life again, ecstatically proclaiming, "I was given a second life."

"37 Grad" airs on Sunday, 25.05. at 9.03 a.m., with the documentary available for replay in the mediathek.
