Lahr's air rescue facility is assigned to the DRF Air Rescue organization.
The Ministry of the Interior, for Digitalization and Communities has announced that DRF Luftrettung GmbH has been awarded the contract for the new air rescue site at Lahr Airport, effective from July 1, 2026. The decision was made on July 21, 2025, following a competitive tender process among three renowned air rescue companies.
DRF, which currently operates seven air rescue sites in Baden-Württemberg, will now operate a total of eight stations from 2026. The new site in Lahr will implement the professional recommendations from the Structural and Need Analysis of Air Rescue in Baden-Württemberg, conducted in May 2020.
Once all recommendations from the analysis have been implemented, the existing ten air rescue sites in the region will be able to reach any location within Baden-Württemberg within 20 minutes during the day. The new air rescue site in Lahr will be equipped with an Airbus H145 D3 helicopter, featuring a five-blade rotor.
The on-board physician for the Lahr helicopter will be provided by the Ortenau Clinic. The pilots, medical-technical crew member, and medical personnel will be provided by DRF.

It is also worth noting that future air rescue locations to be tendered include Aalen, Bayreuth, and Brandenburg. The remaining air rescue sites in Baden-Württemberg will be tendered individually through future procurement procedures.
The call sign for the Lahr helicopter will be "Christoph Ortenau". The concession for the new air rescue site has a term of 15 years. The Press Release of November 17, 2022, pertained to more sites for rescue helicopters.
We look forward to the opening of the new air rescue site in Lahr and the improved emergency response capabilities it will bring to the region.
