International gathering on 'Nuclear Energy for Latvia' set for May in Riga
Blast off to Nuclear Energy for Latvia! Get ready for the 2025 International Conference on Nuclear Energy happening on May 21 in Riga, bringing together policymakers, experts, and the public to fast-forward Latvia's nuclear energy development in line with climate goals and energy independence.
This event, hosted by the non-governmental Development and Innovation Training Center and supported by Riga Technical University, Fermi Energia, Generation Atomic, and Odo, is an opportunity to ponder on nuclear energy's promising future within Latvia.
Why attend? To start, our very own Climate and Energy Minister, Kaspars Melnis (Greens/Farmers), and Talis Juhna, Rector of Riga Technical University, will set the stage with their opening remarks.
Next up, State Secretary Liga Kurevska will reveal Latvia's ambitious nuclear development plans, as detailed in the Ministry of Climate and Energy's report "Nuclear Energy Development Opportunities in Latvia". The report will cover potential cooperation with Estonia, a neighboring Baltic country making strides in adopting small modular reactors (SMRs) by 2035, as Kalev Kallemets, CEO of Fermi Energia, will share.
Hear from international experts, including Professor Oļegs Linkevics scrutinizing the potential of nuclear energy within the Baltic region, Matti Paljakka assessing Finland's collaboration with other Baltic states, and Pawel Gajda from the Polish Ministry of Industry discussing Poland's plans for a second nuclear reactor—an ambitious move even as they construct their first plant!
But it's not all heavy stuff. RTU scientists Antans Sauhats, Romāns Petricenko, and Diana Zalostiba will present comparative studies on nuclear energy and alternative power sources. And Aidan Morrison from the Centre for Independent Studies of Australia will bring some reality checks on renewable energy plans.
Expect insights on safety and sustainability from Roman Voronov from the Lithuanian Energy Institute, who'll share information about reactor decommissioning and radioactive waste management.
The conference will culminate in a comparative analysis of Latvia's nuclear readiness by Agris Auce from the University of Latvia. The event seeks meaningful discussions among policymakers, energy professionals, students, and the public about clean, efficient energy solutions.
Join us and help shape Latvia's bright future in nuclear energy! Mark your calendars and get ready for a transformative event showcasing innovation, collaboration, and a sustainable energy pathway.
