Shocking Leaked Document Allegedly Incriminates Jens Spahn in Mask Debacle - Internal Document Puts Health Minister Jens Spahn Under Scrutiny Over Mask Dispute
In a shocking revelation, an internal report by ex-Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach's (SPD) special commissioner, Margaretha Sudhoff, apparently implicates CDU's Union faction leader, Jens Spahn, in accusations of corruption involving mask procurement during the COVID-19 pandemic, as claimed by NDR, WDR, and "Süddeutsche Zeitung." This damning 170-page report, now owned by the three media outlets, hints at Spahn, who held the Health Minister post until 2021, awarding a €1.5 billion mask procurement contract to North Rhine-Westphalia's logistics company Fiege, without issuing a bidding process. This move came despite warnings from the Federal Ministry of the Interior, responsible for logistics then, and opposition from the government's COVID-19 crisis team.
The controversy isn't limited to masks. The "SZ" reports that the botched procurement project could have cost the federal government billions, echoing stern's July 2024 reports. Many masks ended up in the wastebin.
According to "tagesschau.de," citing the report, Spahn only divulged the project details to the Ministry of the Interior later and disregarded the crisis team's critical preparations for contracts with DHL and Schenker. The report was finalized by Sudhoff in April 2025 but hasn't seen the light of day. Instead, the current Health Minister, Nina Warken (CDU), rigidly refuses to present the report to the Bundestag.
Green health policy spokesperson, Paula Piechotta, criticized Warken's decision, expressing concerns over her efforts to shield Jens Spahn during the latter's political twilight to "tagesschau.de." In the "SZ," Piechotta accused Spahn of wielding influence to secure contracts for CDU-aligned companies in North Rhine-Westphalia during his tenure. Spahn has vehemently defended his actions.
