But researchers at the Immunophysiology Lab at the Champalimaud Foundation suspected something more. They believed the immune system could hold the key to unlocking the mystery of blood sugar management.

"Ever wondered if there was more to the story?" posits researcher Henrique Veiga-Fernandes. "We've recently shown that brain-immune interactions help control fat metabolism and obesity, fueling our curiosity about the potential collaboration between the nervous and immune systems in regulating blood sugar levels."

To test their theory in mice, the team discovered an intriguing fact: without an immune cell known as ILC2, the mice couldn't produce enough glucagon, and their glucose levels plummeted. This led the researchers to zero in on the ILC2 cells and observe their function in healthy mice.

After a fast, these cells would travel to the pancreas, releasing cytokines—tiny chemical messengers—that signaled the pancreatic cells to produce the hormone glucagon. The increase in glucagon, in turn, triggered the liver to release glucose, ensuring steady blood sugar levels.

"This demonstrates that immune cells aren't mere soldiers battling threats," explains Veiga-Fernandes, "but also first responders, stepping in to maintain vital energies and maintain stability in times of need."

These findings have huge implications for managing diabetes, obesity, and possibly even cancer. The researchers say this discovery presents new options for preventing and treating these conditions, as balanced blood sugar is crucial for maintaining overall health.
