In a heartfelt letter published by the "Bild" newspaper with his explicit consent, Wolfgang Grupp, the 84-year-old former CEO of Trigema, revealed his struggle with age-related depression. The renowned businessman, who turned Trigema into one of the most famous German textile and clothing manufacturers, expressed his gratitude towards his wife Elisabeth, children Bonita and Wolfgang junior, and all Trigema employees.

Grupp, who was born on April 4, 1942, in Burladingen, also expressed regret for attempting suicide. He was admitted to a hospital on July 7, as reported by different media, and is currently on the road to recovery. Despite not mentioning his current health status in the letter, he thanked the doctors, nurses, and emergency services who cared for him.

There has been public concern that Grupp attempted suicide, and his disclosure serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing mental health issues in Germany, particularly among older adults. Age-related depression can be triggered by various factors, including retirement, loss of loved ones, and serious illnesses.

The Berufsverband für Psychiatrie, Psychotherapie, Psychosomatik, Nervenheilkunde und Neurologie (BVVP) offers information and resources on mental health, including depression in older adults. They emphasize the importance of recognising physical symptoms as potential indicators of depression.

The AOK Krankenkasse also provides resources and insights into depression among older individuals. The organisation highlights triggers such as retirement, loss of loved ones, and serious illnesses.

While not specifically focused on age-related depression, Deutsche Depressionshilfe provides support and resources for individuals with depression, which can be beneficial for those affected by age-related depression as well. The Stiftung Deutsche Depressionshilfe supports research and awareness about depression, potentially benefiting those seeking help for age-related depression.

Many German hospitals offer both inpatient and outpatient psychiatric services, including counselling and therapy for depression. Local psychosocial support groups can also be found in various regions, offering peer support and professional guidance for individuals dealing with depression.

Wolfgang Grupp's public statement about his experience with depression aims to raise awareness and encourage others to seek professional help. Initiatives like his public disclosure can help normalise discussions about mental health challenges in older age groups. Public awareness efforts can help reduce stigma and encourage more people to seek medical and psychological support when needed.
