Hannover Tests High-Performance CPR to Boost Cardiac Arrest Survival

Hannover's emergency services have begun testing a new, high-performance cardiopulmonary resuscitation (HP-CPR) procedure. Led by Prof. Dr. med. Andreas Flemming, Medical Director of Emergency Services, and the Fire Department Command, this collaborative effort aims to enhance survival rates for cardiac arrest victims.

Since September 1, 2025, the fire department, emergency doctors, and aid organizations have been trialing HP-CPR. This optimized resuscitation method ensures continuous chest compressions while simultaneously integrating crucial measures like airway management and medication administration. The project is expected to improve the chances of successful resuscitation and good neurological recovery, as initial studies and practical experiences have shown.

The introduction of HP-CPR required intensive training and the use of modern resuscitation technology. A unique aspect of this approach is the deployment of a fire engine staffed with four firefighters alongside an emergency doctor vehicle and an ambulance. This provides more helping hands in the early phase of deployment, allowing emergency service personnel to focus on complex medical measures under the leadership of deployed emergency doctors. Firefighters take over chest compressions and support patient transport, enabling emergency service personnel to concentrate on critical medical interventions.

The HP-CPR project in Hannover is a six-month evaluation period. Dr. Axel von der Ohe, First Mayor and Councilor for Finance, Order, and Fire Department, endorses this scientifically sound and proven concept, stating that it has the potential to save lives in emergencies.
