Greifswald Residents Urged to Boil Water After Microbial Contamination

Residents of Greifswald city area, excluding the island of Riems, have been advised to boil their drinking water following the detection of microbial contamination at the Groß Schönwalde waterworks. The city utilities have assured citizens that they are working closely with the health department to address the issue.

On Monday, 08.09.2025, a laboratory discovered enterococci in the drinking water, leading to slight exceedances of limit values at a sampling point. The health department has issued a boiling order as a precautionary measure, as the contamination may cause gastrointestinal irritation. However, no other health hazards are expected at this time.

The cause of the contamination remains unknown. Extensive samples were taken on the same day to investigate the source. It is important to note that there is currently no known connection to the ongoing EHEC incident. The responsible authority for investigating the cause is yet to be explicitly stated.

Citizens are urged to follow the boiling order until further notice. The Greifswald city utilities and the health department are in constant exchange to ensure the safety of the water supply. While the contamination may cause minor discomfort, no serious health risks are anticipated.
