Green Party Calls for Publication of Mask Procurement Report, Slams Ex-Health Minister Spahn

Advocacy by Green Party for the Public Disclosure of Mask Procurement Investigation Report - Green Faction Advocates for Release of Report on Mask Acquisition Procedure

Y'all better believe the Green Party ain't shy about demanding answers when it comes to the mask procurement debacle, and they ain't mincing words about ex-Health Minister Jens Spahn. Here's what's happening:

Britta Haßelmann, the party's parliamentary group leader, slammed the mask procurement as a "giant misfire," implying potentially dire consequences for taxpayers. Haßelmann compared this fiasco to the infamous "Pkw-Maut" debacle, orchestrated by ex-Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer (CSU).

Reports by NDR, WDR, and "Süddeutsche Zeitung" on Friday have dug up some serious dirt on Spahn in a 170-page report by special commissioner Margaretha Sudhoff, initially appointed by ex-Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD). The ex-Health Minister served until the end of 2021.

The accusations leveled against Spahn are substantial. He allegedly awarded a 1.5 billion euro contract for mask procurement to the logistics company Fiege, based in his home state of North Rhine-Westphalia, without holding a tender, despite warnings from the Federal Ministry of the Interior overseeing logistics issues. Furthermore, objections were raised within the government's corona crisis team, but Spahn reportedly overruled them.

This procurement project, which ultimately flopped, led to a billion-dollar loss for the federal government, as reported by the "SZ," with many masks being later trashed. The controversy doesn't stop there, as it also encompasses the procurement of protective clothing and disinfectants.

Leaks of the Sudhoff report, available since April 2025, expose Spahn's role in the mask procurement scandal, though the full report remains unpublished. The reasons behind the government's reluctance to publish the report are unclear.

  1. The Green Party has demanded the publication of the mask procurement investigation report, alleging it as a crucial step towards shedding light on the presumed mismanagement by ex-Health Minister Jens Spahn during the coronavirus pandemic, with claims of biased award of contracts without tenders.
  2. Amidst mounting criticism, the full publication of Margaretha Sudhoff's 170-page report, initially appointed by ex-Health Minister Karl Lauterbach, has not yet been made public, raising questions about the government's reluctance to reveal the findings involving Spahn and other controversial aspects of the mask procurement scandal, including protective clothing and disinfectants.
  3. Additionally, comparisons have been drawn between the mask procurement fiasco and the Pkw-Maut debacle orchestrated by former Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer (CSU), adding fuel to the Green Party's calls for transparency and accountability in policy and legislation related to health, medical-conditions, and health-and-wellness matters within the context of politics and general-news reporting.
