Smoke 'Em If You've Got the Air, Mate!
Government directs designated spots for smoking within airport premises
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra ain't no killjoy when it comes to giving tourists what they want. She's ordered her minions to create ventilated smoking areas in airports, reacting to feedback from travelers and keeping pace with the world's standards.
Puff, Pass, and Chill
According to the official government spokesman, Jirayu Houngsub, the prime minister mentioned during a cabinet meeting that foreigners had been grousing about Thai airports' complete smoking ban. They demanded designated smoking zones, just like those available in several posh international airports.
The PM recognizes Thailand's growing status as a big-time aviation and tourism hub in the region. The fact that millions of travelers pass through Thai airports daily means we gotta give 'em what they want - smoking areas with proper ventilation systems – for convenience and consistency with the global jet-setters.
But Don't Forget Non-Smokers
However, the PM didn't forget about the health of smokers' non-smoking counterparts. She stressed that these smoking areas mustn't harm non-smokers' health. This means the current laws and regs banning indoor smoking might need a refresh.
Duty Calls
Jirayu said that PM requested several agencies to take action.
- The Ministry of Public Health, Ministry of Transport, Airports of Thailand (AoT), and the Department of Airports gotta work together to create these smoking areas within airports without angering the non-smokers or breaking the law.
- The Ministry of Public Health and other relevant government bodies must review and potentially amend the existing laws and regulations to allow smoking within designated airport areas.
In the meantime, Thailand's major airports, such as Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Chiang Mai, Phuket, and more, are already considering the possibility of bringing back smoking rooms, so stay tuned for further updates.
