Government Announcements Summary (02-06-2025)
Second Phase of NAKSHA Programme Launched in India to Enhance Urban Land Surveys
The second phase of the NAKSHA programme, a city survey initiative under the Digital India Land Records Modernization Programme, has been launched in India. The programme aims to equip Urban Local Bodies (ULB) officers and field staff with technical and practical skills for overseeing high-accuracy land surveys.
The training programme, which began on June 2, 2025, will be conducted at five designated NAKSHA Centres of Excellence across India. These centres include the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Yashwantrao Chavan Academy of Development Administration, Northeast Region Centre of Excellence, Mahatma Gandhi State Institute of Public Administration, and Administrative Training Institute.
In the second phase, 304 officers from 157 Urban Local Bodies are being trained to support the deployment and operationalization of the programme at the urban local level. This phase follows the successful completion of the first phase, which trained 160 master trainers across Revenue and Urban Development Departments and GIS professionals.
NAKSHA, which stands for National Geospatial Knowledge-based Land Survey of Urban Habitations, is aimed at leveraging advanced geospatial technologies to create accurate, updated, and integrated urban land records. The programme intends to prevent land disputes, ownership confusion, and planning issues as India’s urban population continues to grow rapidly, expected to cross 600 million by 2031.
The training programme equips ULB officers with the complete NAKSHA methodology, including field survey protocols, aerial imagery interpretation, integration with land records, and collaborating with institutions like the Survey of India. This equips ULB officers to supervise and implement urban land surveys effectively within their jurisdictions.
In summary, the second phase marks the critical transition from training master trainers to building capacity among urban local officers for real-world survey and data integration tasks, preparing cities for smarter, more citizen-friendly governance through precise and reliable land record management.
