Germany Legalizes Private Cannabis Cultivation for Adults
Germany has legalised private cannabis cultivation for adults, marking a significant shift in drug policy. The new Cannabis Act, effective since spring 2024, allows adults to grow up to three female plants at home, with strict conditions to protect children and ensure responsible use.
The law permits adults who have resided in Germany for at least six months to cultivate cannabis in their own living space. The plants must be female, as they contain the intoxicating compound THC. Cultivators can keep up to 50 grams of dried cannabis for personal use. Any excess must be destroyed immediately.
The purchase of cannabis seeds is allowed, sourced from EU member states. The harvested cannabis is strictly for the cultivator's personal consumption. Cannabis cultivation communities, like the VfG Süderelbe e.V. in Hamburg, have emerged as licensed growers. These communities ensure secure protection of cannabis plants and harvested material from access by children and young people at all times.
Germany's new Cannabis Act, effective since spring 2024, has led to the establishment of cannabis cultivation communities and a shift in drug policy. Adults can now grow cannabis for personal use, with clear limits and security measures in place to protect children and promote responsible use.
