Award for Innovation in German Technology: Cleaner Environment and Better Vision Health - German Future Prize Focuses on Clean Environment and Eye Health

The German Future Prize, a prestigious award endowed with 250,000 euros, is set to be presented by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on November 19 in Berlin. The jury will decide the winner from three nominated innovations that aim to address pressing problems and offer solutions for a livable future.

One of the nominated projects is an innovative eye laser procedure developed by Zeiss in Jena. This groundbreaking technology corrects refractive errors with minimal invasion, requiring no heat, large incisions, or long healing times. The procedure means that fewer corneal nerves are cut, reducing the risk of long-term eye dryness for patients.

Another nominee is Traceless GmbH, a company founded by Dr. Anne Lamp and her co-founders in Hamburg. Traceless has developed a biodegradable bioplastic from waste materials from grain processing. This chemical-free natural material decomposes in the environment within a few weeks and does not break down into microplastics like other materials. Traceless bioplastic has properties similar to plastic and feels like it, according to engineer Anne Lamp. It can be used to package snacks, fruits, vegetables, and disposable cutlery, making it a sustainable alternative to traditional plastics.

The third nominee is a fuel cell drive developed by Bosch researchers in Stuttgart. This innovation could replace diesel-powered drives with a robust, everyday, and climate-friendly alternative. Refueling a vehicle operated with the fuel cell drive takes only a few minutes, and it enables emission-free long-distance transport.

Petra M. Jung from the Federal Presidential Office stated that these projects highlight the possibilities we have to shape a livable future. The German Future Prize, now in its 11th year, continues to recognise and celebrate groundbreaking innovations that contribute to a sustainable and prosperous future for all.
