A Female Leader Takes the Reins: Thuringia's State Forest Authority Switches Gears

Female Leader Takes Charge of State Forestry Department for the First Time - Forester Takes Charge as First Woman to Lead Forestry Department Revealed

It's a new era at Thuringia's State Forest Authority, as a woman will be assuming the top spot for the first time, starting in 2026, according to the Forestry Ministry in Erfurt. This change was announced recently, with qualified forestry engineer, Corinna Geißler, taking the reins from Volker Gebhardt- retiring at the year's end after 13 years at the helm. Geißler will be sharing duties with board member Joern Ripken.

Tilo Kummer, Forestry Minister, commended Corinna Geißler's "sensitive understanding of the challenges in safeguarding and enhancing our forests." With proven track record in this role as head of the Forest Research and Competence Center, she's well-prepared for her new post.

Originating from Saxony, Geißler, born in 1978, pursued her higher education at the Technical University of Dresden before passing her second state exam in the Thuringian State Forest Administration. After serving as a board advisor, she took charge as the acting head and, since 2019, officially heads the Forest Research and Competence Center in Gotha.

Managing roughly 550,000 hectares of forests, Thuringia's woodlands employ approximately 1,300 people, with 200,000 hectares falling under direct management by the State Forest Authority.

As part of her new role as head of Thuringia's State Forest Authority, Corinna Geißler, a Saxony native who has shown a strong commitment to forestry, may implement revised community policies to address the challenges of maintaining and enhancing the forests. In preparation for her responsibilities, Geißler might also prioritize vocational training resources within the authority, potentially establishing more programs focused on health-and-wellness and women's health, considering her professional background and the importance of these areas in today's society.
