Expanded Disability Benefits Approval Criteria Includes 13 New Eligible Conditions by Social Security Administration
The Social Security Administration (SSA) has expanded its Compassionate Allowances (CAL) list, adding 13 new medical conditions to expedite the process of providing disability benefits to those in dire need.
The newly added conditions include Au-Kline Syndrome, Bilateral Anophthalmia, Carey-Fineman-Ziter Syndrome, Harlequin Ichthyosis – Child, Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation, LMNA-related Congenital Muscular Dystrophy, Progressive Muscular Atrophy, Pulmonary Amyloidosis – AL Type, Rasmussen Encephalitis, Thymic Carcinoma, Turnpenny-Fry Syndrome, WHO Grade III Meningiomas, and Zhu-Tokita-Takenouchi-Kim Syndrome.
This move is part of the SSA's commitment to improve its disability programs and serve the public more effectively. Since its launch, the Compassionate Allowances initiative has helped over 1.1 million people get benefits through this expedited process.
SSA Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano expressed his support for these additions, stating, "The addition of these conditions will help more people with devastating diagnoses quickly receive the support they need."
The CAL program is specifically designed to accelerate disability application decisions for individuals with the most serious and life-threatening conditions. In many cases, applicants can receive a decision in weeks instead of months.
The SSA's Health IT program plays a crucial role in this process. This program allows for the secure and electronic receipt of medical records, speeding up the disability determination process and ensuring accuracy. Advanced technology in the SSA's system can flag potential CAL conditions, allowing for quicker approval of qualifying cases.
A full list of all 300 Compassionate Allowances conditions can be found on the SSA's website (ssa.gov/compassionateallowances). For more details on the SSA's Health IT program, visit ssa.gov/hit.
With these additions, the CAL list now includes 300 qualifying conditions, offering hope and support to those facing severe and life-threatening illnesses.
