Ion Iliescu, a significant figure in Romania's transition from communism to democracy, has passed away at the age of 95. The Romanian government announced the sad news, with further details regarding a state funeral to be released in due course.

Iliescu's political career spanned over six decades, playing a pivotal role in shaping Romania's post-communist history. He joined the Romanian Communist Party in 1953 and became a member of the Party's Central Committee in 1965. However, he was marginalized by Nicolae Ceaușescu within the Communist Party.

Iliescu's fortunes changed dramatically in December 1989 when he played a leading role in the Romanian Revolution that overthrew Ceaușescu. He assumed de facto military authority during the uprising and served as acting president immediately after the revolution. In May 1990, he was elected Romania's first freely elected president after the fall of communism.

However, Iliescu's presidency was marked by harsh suppression of dissent and the violent suppression of protests, notably the "mineriads" where miners were used to intimidate opposition. He served a second presidential term from 1992 to 1996, lost the presidency to Emil Constantinescu in 1996, and returned for a third presidential term in 2000, during which Romania joined NATO in 2004.

Post-2004, Iliescu served as a senator and honorary president of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), which he co-founded. In 2018, he was charged with crimes against humanity related to his role in approving military measures during the deadly aftermath of Romania’s 1989 Revolution. A court initially rejected the case due to indictment irregularities, but in 2023, the Romanian Court of Appeals ruled that Iliescu’s trial for crimes against humanity could proceed.

Iliescu died on August 5, 2025, having remained a significant but controversial figure in Romania’s post-communist history. His legacy is complex—he is recognized as a founding figure of Romania’s post-communist democracy but also criticized for alleged authoritarian actions and violence during his early presidency and the 1989 revolution aftermath.

The Romanian government conveyed their profound sorrow over the loss of Iliescu, acknowledging his significant role in the country's history. A statement expressed gratitude for his service and contributions to Romania, while also acknowledging the complexities of his legacy.
