Testimony in New York: The Sokola-Weinstein Saga Reemerges
Ex-Polish model provides testimony against Weinstein in New York court setting - Ex-Model from Poland Provides Testimony in New York Court Against Weinstein (Accusing Weinstein)
Weinstein, the 73-year-old ex-film producer, is back in the hot seat in New York court. His retrial, which began mid-April, involves charges surrounding Kaja Sokola, who accuses Weinstein of forced oral sex. This trial follows his 2020 conviction for sexual assault and rape, a verdict that was later overturned due to procedural errors, paving the way for this retrial.
In 2006, Weinstein allegedly assaulted Sokola in New York when she was just 19. Although the alleged actions from when she was 16 are now beyond the statute of limitations, Sokola detailed the harrowing incident in court on Thursday.
Sokola, now 39, first met Weinstein at a swanky dinner with other models at a Manhattan restaurant during her inaugural solo trip to the Big Apple in 2002. She felt "on cloud nine" when the older film producer, four decades her senior, showed interest in her.
Weinstein then invited her to lunch, and subsequently, escorted her to an apartment in Manhattan. There, he coerced her to disrobe, insisting it was necessary if she wanted to break into acting. Despite her vehement protests, Weinstein continued to engage in lewd acts.
When probed by the prosecutor as to why she didn't come forward at the time, Sokola confessed that she felt "embarrassed" and "ashamed." She added tearfully, "I thought it was all my fault."
Sokola continued her chilling testimony on Friday, recounting a second incident in 2006, where Weinstein manipulated her into a Manhattan hotel room and forced himself upon her.
