European Union's Legislative Bodies: The European Parliament and Council
In an effort to address uncertainties about handling a rollator in daily life and promote mobility and independence through the safe use of rollators, the Bochum police traffic accident prevention department, along with their partners, are hosting a rollator safety event on August 13, from 9:30 to 12:30 at Buschmannshof.
The event is open to all interested parties who wish to learn more about rollator safety and usage. The purpose of the event remains the same: to promote safety and independence through the proper use of rollators, thereby preventing accidents.
During the event, a rollator course will be available, allowing participants to practice handling their rollators in various daily situations and overcoming obstacles. The course is designed to help users navigate high curbs, tram tracks, and manhole covers with confidence.
Experts from the Bochum police headquarters, senior citizens' office of Herne, HCR, and traffic safety association Wanne-Eickel will be present to answer questions and provide guidance on rollator usage.
In addition, the Bochum police traffic accident prevention department has provided some tips for safely using a rollator on the road:
- Use designated pedestrian paths and sidewalks whenever possible, avoiding walking on roads where vehicles travel.
- Be highly visible, especially in low light or poor weather conditions; wear bright or reflective clothing and consider adding reflectors or lights to the rollator.
- Pay close attention to traffic signals and crossings, always looking both ways before crossing streets and using pedestrian crossings.
- Keep the rollator stable and under control, ensuring it is fully functional (e.g., brakes work well) to prevent falls.
- Walk at a safe pace that allows you to react to road conditions, obstacles, or approaching traffic.
- Avoid distractions, such as using a phone, so you can stay aware of your surroundings.
- Plan your routes ahead of time to use the safest and most accessible roads or paths.
- If walking near traffic, maintain a safe distance from moving vehicles.
These recommendations are aimed to enhance safety for rollator users when navigating roads shared with vehicular traffic, minimizing the risk of accidents and injuries.
The rollator safety event in Herne, Germany, on August 13, is free and does not require registration. For further questions about the event, please contact the Police Bochum at 0234 909-1027 or by email at [email protected].
The rollator safety event aims to promote health-and-wellness by educating participants on the safe and effective use of rollators, particularly in fitness-and-exercise activities and aging. The event's agenda includes a hands-on practice course to help users navigate various obstacles and daily situations, as well as expert guidance from local authorities on safe rollator usage in health-and-wellness scenarios.
