EAT-Lancet Commission: Shift to 'Planetary Health Diet' Could Save Millions of Lives and Slash Emissions

A groundbreaking report by the EAT-Lancet Commission, co-chaired by Johan Rockström of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, reveals that shifting global food systems and diets could significantly reduce carbon emissions and prevent millions of premature deaths. The commission, organised by the non-profit EAT and the Lancet medical journal, estimates that adopting the 'planetary health diet' could decrease emissions by 15% compared to 2020 levels.

The planetary health diet, a flexible and vegetable-rich food structure, aims to improve public health and restore planetary health. It could prevent around 15 million premature deaths annually by reducing chronic disease rates. However, nearly half of the world's population currently lacks reliable access to healthy food, a clean environment, or a decent wage.

Transforming food systems to achieve this goal requires substantial investment. The commission estimates that annual investments of $200 to $500 billion are needed, but this could generate returns of over $5 trillion annually. Redirecting agricultural and fisheries subsidies, mobilising funds for climate and biodiversity, and aligning private investments are key strategies to unlock this financing.

Food production is responsible for approximately 30% of greenhouse gas emissions and is the main driver of planetary boundaries transgressions. Yet, just 30% of the global population is responsible for around 70% of the environmental pressures caused by food systems.

The EAT-Lancet Commission's findings underscore the urgent need to transform global food systems. By adopting the planetary health diet and investing in sustainable food production, we can decrease carbon emissions, prevent millions of premature deaths, and ensure a healthier future for both people and the planet.
