"During a Flight with IndiGo, Passenger Experiences Physical Assault After Suffering a Panic Attack"
In a shocking incident that unfolded on an IndiGo flight from Mumbai to Kolkata on July 31, 2025, Hafijul Rahaman, a passenger, was identified as the individual who slapped fellow traveler Hossain Ahmed Majumder during a panic attack.
Majumder, a resident of Assam's Cachar, was on his way to Silchar when the incident occurred. The panic attack left him disoriented, and he was assisted by two cabin crew members as they helped him exit the aircraft in Kolkata.
Rahaman, it seems, lost control during the altercation, slapping Majumdar without provocation. IndiGo swiftly responded by declaring Rahaman an unruly passenger, suspending him, and placing him on their no-fly list. Legal action has been initiated by the Kolkata Bidhannagar Police based on a complaint from IndiGo.
However, Rahaman was released pending further investigation. Majumdar, on the other hand, was taken to a hospital for a check-up and later released. He stated that he finds it difficult to get up easily due to the pain on his head caused by the slapping incident.
Contrary to some misleading viral claims, the incident is confirmed not to be communal in nature. Both passengers are from the same religious community (Muslim), and authorities and IndiGo have confirmed this to clarify misinformation around the incident.
After the incident, a missing complaint was filed by Majumdar's family as he went missing for a day. However, he was found safe at a railway station in Assam, returning home by train instead of continuing by flight as planned.
It's important to note that this remains a developing situation with further inquiry and possible legal proceedings pending. The cabin crew also intervened and asked Rahaman why he slapped Majumdar, and Majumdar claimed that he did not misbehave with Rahaman.
Majumdar works at a hotel in Mumbai, and before the incident, he gave his "salam" to Rahaman, indicating that he acknowledged Rahaman's Muslim identity. The incident has raised concerns about passenger safety and behaviour on flights, and IndiGo has reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards unruly passengers.
