Dentist in Colorado stands trial today for alleged fatal poisoning of his spouse
In the courtrooms of Aurora, Colorado, the trial of James Toliver Craig, a former dentist, is currently underway. Angela Craig, a mother of six, passed away on March 18, 2023, following a rapid medical decline and mysterious symptoms, including dizziness, seizures, and brain death. The official cause of death was acute poisoning by cyanide and tetrahydrozoline, with subacute arsenic poisoning listed as a significant condition.
Investigations revealed that James Craig ordered arsenic and cyanide, conducted internet searches on lethal doses and detectability of arsenic, and made protein shakes for Angela, which she consumed before feeling unwell. An office manager also testified that Angela felt faint and dizzy after consuming these shakes, leading police to suspect the poisons were administered in them.
The trial has faced delays, such as the sudden withdrawal of James Craig's attorney, Harvey Steinberg, in November 2024. Steinberg cited two rules of professional conduct as reasons for his withdrawal.
While in jail, Craig allegedly plotted to kill the lead detective investigating his wife's death, another unidentified law enforcement officer, and two other inmates. Investigators believe Craig began planning to end his wife's life one week before her first hospitalization. A case worker with child protective services described a conversation with Craig in which he stated that Angela had been suicidal "for some time."
The arsenic was delivered to Craig's home on March 4, 2023, and an online order of potassium cyanide was delivered to his dental practice on March 13, 2023. Craig has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
