Delmemarket Transforms with New Trees and Amenities
Delmmarkt in Bremen receives five more trees added to its premises
In the heart of Bremen, the Delmemarket has undergone a significant transformation, with the addition of new trees and various amenities for visitors. The project, which includes benches, stools, and bicycle stands, aims to enhance the experience for those using the popular square.
A Collaborative Effort
The elementary school at Kantstraße is playing an active role in this project, sponsoring one or more trees in the Delmemarket. Students from the school attended a tree planting presentation, demonstrating their commitment to the initiative.
Urban Tree Planting Considerations
Urban tree planting projects like this one in Delmemarket typically consider several factors to ensure the trees thrive in their new environment.
Species Selection
The choice of tree species is crucial. Urban conditions often call for trees that are resilient, such as those with drought tolerance, resistance to pests and diseases, and the ability to thrive in diverse environments. Common species include oaks, maples, elms, and lindens. Aesthetic appeal is also considered, with trees selected for their blooming flowers, foliage, and overall appearance.
Root Space and Soil Quality
Adequate root space is essential for tree health, involving sufficient soil volume and depth to accommodate the tree's root system. This can be achieved through the use of tree pits or larger urban planting areas. The quality of the soil is also important, as it affects nutrient availability and water retention.
Measures for Growth and Protection
To support growth and protect the trees, measures such as automated watering systems, regular pruning, protection from harm, monitoring, and the use of tree guards or planters are often implemented.
Delmemarket's New Trees
The Delmemarket received new trees in September and October, following the removal of an underground bunker in March. The trees, European ashes, have a root space of 30 cubic meters each, filled with a mixture of larger stones, finer soil, plant charcoal, and tree substrate to ensure stability, air, and water.
Extensive measures have been implemented according to the action concept 'City Trees' to provide the best possible conditions for the new European ashes. The tree beds are protected by tree grates, serving multiple purposes, including acting as benches, stools, and bicycle stands for visitors.
Irrigation pipes and water sensors were installed in the ground of the Delmemarket to ensure consistent moisture levels. The construction time for the paving and final work in the Delmemarket is expected to last until early November 2024 (weather dependent).
On October 17th, Kathrin Moosdorf, Senator for Environment, Climate and Science, and Viola Hellwag, Managing Director of Bremen's Environmental Agency (UBB), presented the new tree plantings. The school's involvement in tree sponsorship is aimed at giving the trees the best development opportunities on a heavily used square and providing a good start in light of climate change.
Five European ashes were planted without any further obstacles, marking a significant step towards a greener and more welcoming Delmemarket.
- The Delmemarket's tree planting initiative, which includes European ashes, is part of a broader commitment to health-and-wellness and environmental-science, considering factors like species selection, root space, and growth measures.
- The new Delmemarket trees, planted in September and October, are a collaborative effort with the elementary school at Kantstraße, who sponsored them as part of a collective action to combat climate change and enhance the square's fitness-and-exercise and science-related learning opportunities for students.
- As part of the Delmemarket's urban tree planting project, implemented measures for growth and protection include automated watering systems, tree grates serving as benches, stools, and bicycle stands, irrigation pipes, and water sensors, aiming to create an appealing and sustainable health-and-wellness space in the heart of Bremen.
