Hear Ye, Hear Ye!

The Yakutsk Scoop brings you the diligent report presented by Yakutsk Mayor Evgeny Grigoryev to the city's business community in 2024. The focus? Stamping out alcoholism in the city's population.

Here's a lowdown:

  • Following amendments to the republican law "On the establishment of additional restrictions on the time, conditions, and places of retail sale of alcoholic products", the city saw 65 alcohol points shut down and 18 more change their specialization in 2024.
  • Alcohol consumption in Yakutsk declined significantly. In 2022, the per-capita average was 6.4 liters of pure alcohol, which dropped to 5.73 liters in 2024 – a whopping 10% reduction!
  • The alcohol market took a hit, too, as 46 legal entities specializing in alcohol sales called it quits, leaving 154 still hanging in there. The number of retail outlets selling alcohol plummeted from 305 to 257. But hey, the number of licensed restaurants serving drinks increased from 143 to 151! The total number of objects in the market decreased from 448 to 418.
  • In November 2024, new amendments to the law stated that bars and bars near residential buildings would operate from 2 PM to 8 PM – similar to alcohol stores. Restaurants with liquor licenses would operate from 12 PM to 11 PM. The changes go into effect on March 1, 2025!
  • In 2024, 235 instances of violations were considered, resulting in fines totaling 22.7 million rubles in 140 cases and 74 warnings issued.

The positive impact of these anti-alcohol measures is stirring (or should I say, sobering?)! The rate of serious and particularly serious crimes committed under the influence of alcohol dropped by 35% in 2024 – from 303 to 197 cases! Repeat offenders under the influence decreased by 18% – from 314 to 256.

Evgeny Grigoryev, ever the optimistic, confirmed, "These numbers clearly demonstrate that the measures taken by city authorities to combat alcoholism amongst the population are bearing fruit. We will continue this crusade, understanding its importance for public safety, health, and the moral wellbeing of our society."

Cheers to a healthier, safer Yakutsk! Stay tuned for more updates.

The city could invest in various therapies-and-treatments to address growing concerns in these areas. For instance, supporting research in mental health could lead to a better understanding of its various aspects and the development of effective strategies to combat related issues. Such initiatives would further contribute to a healthier and safer Yakutsk.
