The Indian government is taking significant strides in modernising urban development and the dairy sector, addressing critical needs and fostering sustainable growth.
Urban Development: The NAKSHA Programme
The National Geospatial Knowledge-based Land Survey of Urban Habitations (NAKSHA) programme, launched by the Department of Land Resources, aims to revolutionise urban land records in India. The pilot initiative, covering 157 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) across 27 States and 3 Union Territories, is set to empower urban citizens, improve urban planning, and enhance municipal revenue collection.
NAKSHA's objectives include providing transparent and legally verifiable land ownership data, improving urban planning through a comprehensive GIS-integrated database, and reducing land disputes. The programme aligns with India's projected urban population growth, addressing the critical need for modern land records to foster sustainable urban development.
The second phase of the NAKSHA programme, commencing from 2 June 2025, will train 304 ULB-level and district officers from the participating ULBs. The training will be conducted for a week at five Centres of Excellence institutions.
Dairy Sector: Boosting Production and Empowering Farmers
India's dairy sector has been witnessing remarkable growth, with a steady annual growth rate of 5.7%. The country, home to the world's largest livestock population, is a global leader in milk production, accounting for 25% of the world's milk.
The government's initiatives like the National Livestock Mission, the Nationwide Artificial Insemination Programme, and the Rashtriya Gokul Mission are designed to boost employment, support entrepreneurship, and increase per animal productivity. These efforts lead to higher production of meat, goat milk, eggs, and wool.
The Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Women Startup Scheme, launched in Maharashtra, provides early-stage support to women-led startups in the dairy sector. Approximately 35% of women participate in dairy cooperatives in India, and the Kisan Credit Cards (KCC) facility has been made available to livestock and dairy farmers since 2019.
Celebrating World Milk Day and Embracing Technological Advancements
World Milk Day, celebrated globally on June 1, acknowledges milk's importance as a universal food. This year's theme, "Let's Celebrate the Power of Dairy," resonates with India's dairy sector advancements. The Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund, launched in June 2020, incentivises investments in dairy processing and value addition infrastructure, meat processing and value addition infrastructure, animal feed plants, and breed improvement Technology and Breed Multiplications farms.
